Our Commitment : Cleaner and Better Production in the 21st Century

Mother Nature has its own way to maintain a balanced, prosperous and sustainable living world on Earth. However, the technological leap and economic growth of the human society over the past century has become a vital factor to the self-curing capacity of Nature. It not only results in serious environmental problems, but also becomes a crisis to all human beings. The abnormal weather, greenhouse effect, deforestation, increasing large ozone hole, acid rain and extinct species worldwide are only symptoms reflecting the nature of this problem.

In the closing moments of the 20th century, human beings finally understood why the old motto "to conquer the Nature" has to be replaced by "to harmonize with Nature". With this new thinking, the drive for environmental protection and ecological balance has not only become a consensus of the human society but also triggered widespread environmental efforts. The arrival of the new millenium, on the other hand, provides human beings with a new page to record its activities and achievements towards a more sustainable relation with the substances on Earth.

In this process, China Steel understands its role and responsibilities as a material supplier. Therefore, at the beginning of the 21st century, China Steel prepared an environmental report, outlining its environmental experiences and performances in the previous century. With this report, we intend to show the environmental trace of our previous efforts on issues, and to mark the direction for the pursuing of 'Cleaner Production" and Sustainable Development" in the future.

China Steel Corporation Environment, Safety and Hygiene Policy

China Steel Corporation (CSC) was founded on December 3rd, 1971, establishing Taiwan's first integrated steel mill in Kaohsiung, the heavy industry capital of Taiwan. CSC's production includes iron-making, steel-making and rolling. In order to materialize our environmental, safe and hygienic management plan that protects the health and safety of our workers as well as the environment while helping CSC maintain sustainable development, we commit ourselves to the following:

We commit ourselves to the following:

  • Educational Training:
Concentrated efforts are made to educate employees concerning the environments, safety and hygiene. A corporate culture of taking initiatives enthusiastically is established for every task.
  • Advocating Communication:
Communication with employees and relevant interested parties is enhanced. The concept of being a good neighbor to the community through environmental protection is stressed.
  • Continuous Improvement:
CSC will strive to create a zero-accident work environment, save energy, reduce waste, reinforce the functions of corrective& preventive measures so as to have better performance on issues regarding the environments, safety, and hygiene.
  • Health Concerns:
Safety programs and health management activities are held duly in order to help prevent work-related injuries and promote the overall health of our employees.
  • Risk Management:
Vigilant attention is paid to risk evaluation and environmental issues. Contractors' safety and hygiene management, risk control and pollution prevention measures are strictly reinforced in order to guard against potential injury or damage to employees or the environment.
Environmental Management System (EMS)

In 1996, CSC established its Environmental Management System (EMS) by integrating previous activities and functions. This EMS system was granted an ISO 14001 registration in December 1997 through the verification of the Standards Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Ecological Environment

Due to the progress in pollution prevention and factory greening over the years, the natural environment at CSC has been improved largely. As a result, many birds reside at/around CSC. Statistics show that approximately 30 species of birds originally residing in Taiwan and 20 species of migrant birds appeared at CSC. Among these are rare birds such as Ruddy Kingfisher, Black Bittern, Eurasian Woodcock and Siberian Rubythroat.

Local Environmental Protection

Local environmental activities that CSC has engaged in include the greening of the nearby school areas, the greening of public roads surrounding CSC, the co-organization of training camps on eco-systems and bird watching, and the publications of natural and ecological highlights. The trip of "Steel," which is held periodically for students in the local elementary schools and residents enables the local community to have a better understanding of the operation of integrated steel making and CSC's efforts in protecting the environments.
