Ever since the foundation of China Steel Corporation (CSC) the Utilities Department has not only supplied utilities, handled wastewater treatment and reutilized by product gases, but has also coordinated and planned all energy related affairs. Because integrated steel making is an energy intense process CSC created the “Energy Saving Committee” in 1978 to promote energy savings. In 1982, we set up the environmental protection section. In 1993 we set up the Industry Hygiene and Environmental Protection Department, and in 2007 the Environmental Protection Department became a standalone department. In 1996, we integrated the separate environmental activities and installed an “Environmental Management System” which received ISO 14001 certification in 1997. In 2005, with the addition of the Occupation Safety and Hygiene Management System, the Environmental Management System changed to the “Environmental, Safety and Hygiene Management System.” After the Kyoto Protocols, requests for energy saving and environmental protection became increasingly stringent for the sustainable development of steel mills. Thus CSC established the “Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs” to draw out policies in energy, resources, environment and pollution prohibition for the CSC Group. In addition, in 2011 CSC established the “CSC Group Energy and Environment Promotion Committee” to effectively plan, coordinate, promote and audit related energy and environmental affairs for the CSC Group. The committee will also promote green steel, low carbon energy, energy savings and emission reduction in production processes, along with law and regulation risk management and green investment.
