On February 27th, 2013, China Steel Corporation (CSC) held the domestic pricing meeting for 2013 April-May shipments and announced the following statement:
ECB keeps easing monetary policy to boost business confidence, despite short-term political turmoil, European debt crisis has not worsened further, and steady recovery can be expected for Euro Zone. Meanwhile, even though U.S. congress is still disputing over federal budget cuts, U.S. economic indicators show improving signs, including corporate investment and consumer confidence, the stock market and housing industry also performing well. In China, fixed investments continue to expand, export and industrial production improves. Benefitting from the recovery of global economy, Taiwan’s export and import both show sign of improvement and DGBAS revised upwards 2013 GDP growth rate again to 3.59%.
Supported by the increasing iron ore prices and the global economy turning better, steel prices continue to increase. U.S. major steel using industry such as automobile, energy and construction industries look promising, and infrastructure investment is also expanding in China. After Chinese Lunar New Year, major steel mills in China, Japan, and Korea all raised export prices. Second quarter is traditionally hot season for steel industry, prices are expected to continue upward trend.
With NTD depreciation and international steel prices hike, export of downstream industries in Taiwan picked up, both export and domestic market prices also increased. Considering current steel market price level and competitiveness of customers, except general PLATE keeping flat, CSC has decided to increase prices for all other products, by an average margin of 3.81% (the average increased price is NT$802/MT) for 2013 April-May shipments.
