The 2020 Steel Tour Held for Six Graders in Siaogang by CSC

Before graduating from elementary schools in the Siaogang District every year, six graders are invited to take part in the Steel Tour held by CSC, which contributes to local education. Although affected by the Covid-19 pandemic this year, CSC upheld the concept that what was taken from the society had to be returned to it. As a result, the activity was still held this year. Due to the pandemic prevention considerations, large-scale indoor events and activities had been cancelled. Factory visits were replaced by online introductory videos about steelmaking in an integrated steel mill as well as production of by-products so that the graduating students who watched the videos would have a preliminary understanding of the knowledge about them and steel-related industries. Approximately 1,300 graduating elementary school students in 52 classes from 13 different elementary schools in Siaogang participated in this year’s activities between May 18 and June 4, 2020, respectively. In addition, at 18:00 on May 27, the official website of the CSC Education Foundation also offered an online learning platform for the graduating students to learn online to enhance their learning.

Due to the prevention considerations of the Covid-19 pandemic, graduating elementary school students learned about the origin of steel, steel production processes, etc. by watching films, which was different from the way the tour had been conducted in the past. A question bank and prizes for quizzes had been prepared, and the teachers elaborated on the topics related to the circular economy and environmental protection in their daily life in class in a fun and interactive Q&A manner to strengthen their active learning. In addition, in order to lengthen the learning effects and encourage the students to develop the good habit of self-learning after classes, the CSC Education Foundation established an online learning platform on its official website this year to allow the students to learn online even if they left their schools so as to enhance their learning.

Principal Huichi Ma, Pingding Elementary School, said that many activities had to be suspended or postponed this year due to the pandemic, but CSC still held the Steel Tour, which was in compliance with the pandemic prevention measures, out of its commitment to the local community. The activity enabled the students to have a preliminary understanding of the local steel industry, and he was very grateful to CSC for its dedication.

General Manager Hongkui Sun, Department of Public Affairs of CSC, said that CSC was honored to contribute to local education and fulfilled its corporate social responsibility because CSC implemented the concept that what was taken from the society had to be returned to it. With the Covid-19 pandemic, he hoped that the students would face the challenges with a positive attitude after graduation and never gave up, and he believed that the students could make their dreams come true and have a bright future as long as they had determination.
